It's officially spring in New England and signs of Earth's waking up are beginning to emerge. Maybe even more so than January, the start of spring feels like a shift. We get to embrace a brand new season and a fresh start. This month's Skincare Blühprint is all about beginning again, and embracing that "beginner" energy as we revisit old goals or embark on new adventures. It gives you permission to not be an expert, to make and learn from mistakes, and to celebrate your progress, no matter how seemingly small.
Do you remember learning something new as a child? Riding a bike, perhaps, or learning to play an instrument? When our peers are all in the same boat (that is, learning something new, all at the same time), it's so easy to go with the natural flow of learning, trying, doing, messing up a little, and trying again. Along the way, and as we all take different paths, we start to notice and measure ourselves against other's progress. Are we ahead? Are we behind? Are we making more mistakes?
As we tap into spring's growth energy, this is the perfect time to return to the beginner mindset that was so much easier as a child. What will you take on this season? We have a few ideas for you:
- Commit to learning a new language (or revisit your studies, if this is something you've already done)
- Get really good at preparing one or more signature dishes (and celebrate your accomplishments with an early summer dinner party!)
- Sign up for a 5k (perhaps one this summer or early fall), research training plans, and being your walking or running (this is a great time to enlist a friend and begin together)
- Peruse your area's library, adult education, or community center classes and sign up for something that sounds enjoyable or exciting to you
Acknowledging that being a beginner can be challenging, we encourage you to stick with it, trusting that the experience will be worth any discomfort. Instead of focusing on the possibility of failure or embarrassment, embrace that child-like curiosity and wonder. Be open to the possibility that you could be really great at this new thing you're doing or trying (at the very least, you'll learn something new and likely have fun)... rather than putting pressure or judgement on yourself to be perfect. Share the experience with loved ones, and be sure to celebrate when something (no matter how small) goes well.
